Short answer
What you need to know before submitting
AlternativeTo's regular review queue contains several thousand apps and has no guaranteed review date. Your pending submission is visible only to you. A paid priority review usually takes 1–2 business days but buys a review, not acceptance.
Important limitation
A basic single-function web tool, generic AI wrapper, content directory, unreleased app or agency service may not meet AlternativeTo's current editorial criteria. Paying for priority review does not change eligibility.
Best for: Released software with a real alternative-use case. User intent: App review time / rejection / submission.
Step-by-step
Get your AlternativeTo submission right
Search for an existing listing first
Search AlternativeTo for your exact product name and related competing apps. If your product is already there, suggest a correction rather than submitting a duplicate.
Verify your account email
Register or log in and verify the email address. AlternativeTo requires verified email before a new app submission; this is separate from signing up or voting.
Choose Suggest new application
Use the user-menu option. Fill platforms, licence, description and tags truthfully. Describe the product's actual alternatives rather than tagging unrelated popular apps.
Look under My submissions
This dashboard lists your pending apps and queue. An app URL that opens only in your signed-in session is not a public listing. Save that distinction in your submission record.
Decide whether expedited review is worth paying for
The paid Get reviewed sooner option moves the item to an earlier human review. It cannot make a low-fit or excluded product eligible. If declined, read the stated reason before considering changes.
Avoidable mistakes
What usually goes wrong
“I can open the app page, so it must be live.”
AlternativeTo explicitly says pending pages can be visible only to the account owner.
Do this instead: Open the URL in a signed-out browser before marking your listing published.
“Priority review guarantees approval.”
The one-time fee pays for a faster human decision, not the decision itself; rejection is still possible.
Do this instead: Check the published exclusions first, especially for simple tools, generic AI wrappers and unreleased products.
“I can track signups with a UTM-tagged official URL.”
The site's FAQ generally disallows UTM parameters in the official website field.
Do this instead: Use standard referral analytics and keep a clean canonical product URL.
When a pending submission has been waiting for months
Do not keep creating duplicate application records. AlternativeTo's normal backlog is substantial and it cannot supply a definite rank in the queue. The right operational status is pending_review even if you've been waiting for several months. Save the original submission date, owner dashboard URL and any email response.
Priority review is only useful after checking basic eligibility. A product built around a single converter, a generic model wrapper, or a directory of other tools may remain outside the platform's focus. For those products, a more suitable discovery channel is often better than paying to accelerate an expected refusal.
What to measure if you finally get listed
When the page becomes public, capture the final listing URL, its visible product categories, the outbound website link and the first date you verified it. Don't count a review-queue URL as an earned backlink. Since AlternativeTo says its outgoing links are usually nofollow, compare relevant referral visits and trial starts rather than a promised SEO score.
An AlternativeTo listing works best for a user who is actively comparing software that solves the same job. If your product's positioning is too generic, improve the alternative comparison on your own site before attempting to expand the listing to dozens of unrelated competitors.
Do not lose your submission
Keep proof of the attempt and the result
Before you leave, save AlternativeTo, your product URL, the submitted date, receipt, current status and any owner-only action. Only set the status to live after a signed-out visitor can open the final public listing URL.

Founder questions
AlternativeTo submission FAQ
How can I tell whether AlternativeTo approved my app?
Check My submissions in your signed-in account and open the final listing as a signed-out visitor. The site says pending apps appear in My submissions and may be visible only to you; approved apps become publicly visible and leave the pending list.
How long is the AlternativeTo free review queue?
The official FAQ reports several thousand pending applications and does not promise a date. Do not assume a particular number of days or months for your own submission.
Is priority review a guaranteed dofollow backlink?
No. Priority moves your app to an earlier human review and does not change ranking, approval or link policy. AlternativeTo states outbound links are usually nofollow.
What if a simple AI tool gets rejected?
Review the current editorial exclusion list. Generic AI wrappers and many one-task utilities may be excluded even if similar older apps are present. Consider different launch channels rather than duplicate submissions.
